A Taste of spring

It’s hard to believe that it was snowing just a few days ago and yesterday was a gorgeous 75 degrees and sunny in southeastern Pennsylvania. It could not have come at a better time. The sunshine was a welcome reprieve to the sadness that filled our homes over the past week as we felt the pain of those directly affected by last week’s tragedy in Florida.

There is no denying that sunshine is good for the soul; it makes us happy. I took advantage of being off yesterday and got myself and my kids outside! We ate breakfast and headed to one of our favorite spots, the Morris Arboretum. We have had a family membership there for the past two years and we have definitely gotten more than our money’s worth! It’s our go-to spot when we are in need of some fresh air. Click on the link The arboretum to learn more.

We arrived shortly after they opened their gates around 10:30 in the morning. Not surprisingly, it was already filled with other families who had the same idea of soaking up this uncommon February warmth and sunshine. With Penn slung to my chest, the girls and I began to explore the arboretum’s beautiful grounds. No matter how frequently we have visited, I always have a unique experience each time I venture to the arboretum.

Last spring, on one of my last days of maternity leave, I came to the arboretum with just Penn. I soaked up the last of my time off from work with him as we wandered without a plan through the vast landscape there. Even though I had been to the arboretum countless times before, I stumbled across an area I had not seen before. It felt magical to come to this grotto that led to a cave that passed through to a trail alongside a bubbling creek. It was fresh, new…rejuvenating. It made me feel hopefully for what would come in the coming weeks as I anxiously looked forward to the inevitable of having to leave Penn when I had to return to work. And it was ok. And I felt ok.

I took the girls there today. We had been to the arboretum so many times since that day last spring but it wasn’t until today that I stumbled across the grotto again. They were both just as captivated by its beauty as I was a year ago. And I felt that same feeling again. It felt like spring. And the dark cave who’s opening allowed the brilliant sunshine to flood in, drew us to that path that raveled, twisting through the woods beside a singing creek made me happy. It made us all happy. It made us forget about all of our worries for a while. It helped us to be present and to enjoy the here and now. That’s how magical nature is. It has the power to transport us to a different place. Getting outside has been my therapy when I’m feeling down and it works every single time! Looking forward to warmer weather but trying to savor each and every day, rain or shine!

And hey, if it’s raining (like it is here today), you could always just dab on a little oil (ie-geranium, lavender, frankincense, bergamot, ylang ylang, peppermint, orange…I could go on and on!) and you will instantly feel happy!!

Keep riding high

After a few weeks of highs, looking forward to our team, the Philadelphia Eagles, bringing home the Lombardi trophy, it’s easy to find yourself in a slump following all of the excitement. I often find that after looking forward to something for so long, enjoying the fun ride along the way, there is this period of feeling down immediately following. Do you guys ever feel like that?

Fear not, I have a solution to keeping spirits up and continuing to ride that wave of excitement to the next big thing! How, you ask…yep, you guessed it-OILS! My go-to when I’m not feeling my happiest is geranium. They don’t call it the great balancer for nothing! Geranium is known to balance hormones. When something major happens (like your team winning the super bowl!) your endorphins sky rocket. After the excitement wears off it’s natural to feel a bit off balance. Applying a few drops of geranium on your wrist or behind your ears can instantly uplift mimicking that feeling of sheer bliss that is experienced in life’s greatest events. Smelling it’s scent can signal the brain’s limbic system to release chemicals to recreate positive emotions and make you happy!

My family is die hard when it comes to the eagles-we bleed green! Many of us waited a lifetime for a championship win. That moment finally came and we literally could not be happier. All across the region you could feel the joy people had during this time. It was palpable. It’s amazing a football team could evoke such positivity in a community especially considering all else going on in the world today.

The natural high that accompanies such events is amazing. When that feeling wears off, don’t forget there are ways to naturally keep that feeling alive. In addition to essential oils, there are many ways to accomplish this. The day after the Eagles parade of champions, I have to admit, I was feeling a little down. I was exhausted from the week’s events-from the days leading up to the big game, high hopes held for an Eagles victory to the big game itself, culminating with a massive celebration in the city of brotherly love to honor our team, newly crowned WORLD CHAMPIONS and family life and working in between. I knew I had to do something in order to pick myself up. I had plans to travel south to spend time with my mother in law who had been away for weeks and just returned home with a new puppy. While the thought of traveling after a long week and a long work week ahead felt daunting, I knew it was as what I needed. I packed up the car and the kids early Saturday morning and headed to the beach and I am so happy I did! Even in the wintertime, there is something magical about being by the ocean. A quick walk on the beach, breathing in that moist salty air, hearing the ocean waves crashing on the shore, I felt happy. That, coupled with the ones I love (and puppy kisses!) no better way to keep that winning feeling going.

If you are ever feeling low, post big event or otherwise, all you need is a little fresh air, family, and oils!! That’s love!

Geranium is not included in your starter kit but lavender is another oil that makes me happy and it is included in starter kit. But get geranium too! Oh what a night!

Wow! Can you believe it? Our beloved Philadelphia Eagles are world champions! It’s incredible. While I had faith this team could get it done, I am still in shock! No one can really prepare you for how it feels when your team wins the biggest game ever. I can tell you it feels AMAZING! Pure joy for the people of Philadelphia and any Eagles fan around the world this super bowl Monday!

Not only did our team win, it was also a great game. A hard fought battle on both ends. Both teams pulling out tricks that would hopefully give them the edge. Luckily for us, our quarterback can throw and CATCH the football! Luckily the other one cannot! How amazing was that touchdown from Nick Foles? Super Bowl MVP amazing! Unreal! The Eagles came together on the biggest stage in the NFL and played their hearts out. You could see how badly they wanted it. It was evident given their resilience. When the Patriots would score, they would fight right back. While the Eagles maintained the lead for most of the game, it was a tight fight the whole time! It came down to the last second and our defense held strong and prevented the “G.O.A.T” from getting the ball to someone in the end zone. Who’s the greatest of all time now?!

Spirits were high when that clock hit :00 to end the game in an Eagles victory! Super Bowl champs! The Eagles first ever title. It was magic! The type of magic that brings grown men to tears! Celebrations were had throughout the region, be it on broad street or beyond. The celebration continues and will culminate with a parade in Philadelphia in honor of our deserving champs and their fans who truly bleed green!

After a day of indulgence-food and drink and very little sleep, you may be feeling it today! A little lemon in our water to hydrate and rejuvenate, a dab of peppermint to our temples to for an instant pick me up, or a drop of lavender to relax us during a time of extreme highs will surely carry us on this amazing ride! (All of which are including in the starter kit! Click link to get your Starter kit )

Keep riding high Philadelphia fans! And look forward to more great times ahead at the victory parade on Thursday!

Sweet dreams!

Sleepless in suburbia

It’s 830 pm and the two younger kiddos are finally tucked snug in their beds. The smart move for this tired mama would have been to finish up last minute chores and hit the sack myself but no! Instead I decide to try to catch up on ‘This is Us’ with my oldest. Of course one episode turns into two (how can you just watch one episode?! It’s just too good.) and before I know it is 11 o’clock. By the time I finally lay down it almost 1130 but hey, if Penn can sleep til at least 630 I’m good!

Well of course, just my luck, clock hits 145 am and Penn is awake! Typically in these situations I pull him into bed with me and shortly after he dozes back off to sleep. Not this time though! Baby boy was ready to play, clapping his hands and talking up a storm-wide AWAKE! And of course, I just used the last of the sleepyIze essential oil the night before (probably the reason Penn slept great that night!)

SleepyIze is an oil in Young Living’s children’s line. It’s a blend of lavender, Roman chamomile, geranium, bergamot, frankincense, and tangerine. It is used to promote relaxation at bedtime or nap time to help little ones unwind and drift off to sleep. I could’ve ran out to my car to grab the lavender I had in my work bag but it was about 17 degrees out there and I thought it’d be crazy to venture out into that! Penn would be asleep soon…I thought.

It’s now 330 am and Penn is still bright eyed and bushy tailed and this mama was beyond exhausted. Out the car for the lavender it was after all! A couple drops diluted in coconut oil and warmed up in my hands before massaging it onto his back and five minutes later, just like magic, baby boy was sleeping soundly! Definitely getting lavender and sleepyIze this month so I always have back up for emergencies like this!

Penn ended up sleeping til almost 9 which would’ve been amazing except for the fact that I had to be up at 630 to wake Taylor for school. Mama tired! Of course, oils to the rescue!

There are numerous oils that are great for energy. My all time favorite is Geranium. It’s considered the great balancer, helping to keep our hormones in check. It’s also uplifting-great when feeling run down and tired. I apply geranium to my wrists neat (undiluted) and inhale it’s floral scent throughout the day. Other oils great for energy include orange, lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus, ginger, bergamot, grapefruit, pine, and black pepper. Next time you are feeling tired, grab yourself some oils instead of that second (or third) cup of coffee. You will be amazed at how refreshed you feel!

All green, all week!

It’s super bowl week!!

That’s right… just 6 days til super bowl 52. And our team is going! The Philadelphia eagles are going to the super bowl! Crazy, right?! This town has been buzzing since last Sunday’s demolishing of the Minnesota Vikings. With a beat down like that, how could we not be riding high? It’s everything green in the city of brotherly love and we could not be more excited! We have waiting a long 13 years for this. Could it be a better scenario than to face the cheaters who robbed us of the Lombardi trophy more than a decade ago? It couldn’t be in my opinion! I love it! In addition to being the “underdogs” (yet again) we are afforded a rematch! With our backup quarterback none the less! Insane! Let’s not forget how we got here though-the success of Carson Wentz, locking in 10 wins before going down in week 13 against the rams. Morale was low but was quickly lifted as Nick Foles stepped up and jumped into that leadership role. Flash forward to today…super bowl bound, the country on our side, ready to fly to victory.

It’s gonna be white angelica in the diffuser all week this week! White angelica is a blend of bergamot, myrrh, geranium, sandalwood, ylang ylang, coriander, black spruce, melissa, hyssop, and rose essential oils and is known to promote feelings of security and protect against negative energy. Good vibes only for the birds this week! (Side note- after the Vikings scored that first touchdown in last week’s matchup, I immediately grabbed my white angelica and fired up the diffuser! You all know what happened after that! 😜🙌🏼) To all of you that already have white angelica…diffuse is, rub it on your wrist, do whatever you have to do to bring the eagles positive energy this week. And to those who don’t…get some! Starter Kit Happy Monday friends!

Winter Skin

It’s that time of year when extreme cold begins to wreck havoc on your skin. This winter has been especially brutal. Exposing ourselves to the elements can take a toll on our skin. Even walking from your house to your car without gloves can begin to dry them out.

December and January in the Philadelphia area have been crazy cold! Colder that any winter I can remember in recent years. So cold that the hose for my washing machine froze and cracked 😬! To make matters worse, it’s been cold but we have not gotten too much snow. I’m the type that is like “if it’s gonna be cold, bring on the snow!”. I’m a beach lover but I have to admit I love the magic of winter. There’s nothing quite like being snowed in with the fam, watching the fresh flakes falling from the sky, hot chocolate in hand (or more likely coffee for me!), getting warm next to a crackling fire, snuggled up with the babes under a cozy blanket! It’s simply the best-pure magic! <
nfortunately along with that often comes something not so magical-extremely dry skin! Luckily I have discovered some ways to significantly reduce the occurrence of dry skin for myself and my kids. Number one tip, moisturize! There are a number of products out there that promise relief of even the driest of skin. They may work but most of them contain harsh chemicals that present other dangers to your family. My go to is lavender and cedarwood! I combine a couple drops of each oil with a couple pumps of fractionated coconut oil (I use Ellie’s Best, found on amazon (Ellie’s best) and massage over entire body. It leaves skin silky smooth and smells amazing too! I even add a couple drops of lavender to bath water to keep skin from drying out from hot water. It also is a great way to get the babes relaxed before bed!

Another negative impact of winter on the skin is, believe it or not, acne. I was so surprised to learn that acne was just as common in winter months as it is in the summer. I figured, hot temperatures mean excessive sweating, hence greater incidence of breakouts. The fact is, the wind and the dry, cold temperatures of the winter months dehydrate the skin causing it to produce extra oils as a result, making it more prone to bacterial growth and breakouts!

Essential oils are a great natural remedy for acne. My teenage daughter kept getting bouts of acne. It was painful and the appearance bothered her. Tea tree to the rescue! We applied tea tree essential oil neat (undiluted) to her face each night. After one treatment the acne improved. Within three days the acne was totally gone! To keep things in check, she applies a blend of lavender, tea tree, and coconut oils on her face daily. So far, so good! No more breakouts!

Since we are on the topic of skin…Penn developed a horrible rash last night. It covered his back, belly, neck, and face. He had been on an antibiotic (5th ear infection😬, remember?!) for three days. Viral rash? That was my first thought considering he had been on this antibiotic before and not developed a rash of any sort. Then I remembered, sometimes it takes 2-3 exposures before developing an allergic reaction. An emergency visit to the drs this morning, we learned it was in fact likely a reaction to the antibiotic. Luckily his ears are good so no need for another antibiotic. Management of his symptoms is all that is necessary at this point. The doctor offered me steroid cream but I turned it down. I wanted to keep it natural if possible. It was oatmeal baths and oils only for this babe! After his oatmeal bath he seemed much more comfortable. (We use Aveno Oatmeal bath and gentle baby soap by Babo Botanicals) After bath, I used a combination of lavender, geranium, and coconut oil to rub down his entire body. Lavender and geranium are known to sooth skin rashes; control itching and help heal. 🤞🏼 With a couple more winter months still to come, remember using essential oils on a regular basis can help prevent skin issues. Don’t wait, go get some NOW! You will thank me! Starter kit
