How oils have changed my life (one year after I took the plunge into this world)

This month marks one year since I took the plunge and got myself a starter kit from young living. I was introduced to essential oils over 10 years ago when I took a holistic health class for nursing school. I was intrigued and fascinated by the magic these little bottles held back then but didn’t decide to fully incorporate them into my life until last August. I wish I had known what I know now, back then. I would’ve done it so much sooner. But hey, better late than never, right?!!

Young living has changed my life in so many ways! Restless babies? Lavender to the rescue! Each night after bath and before bed, each child gets a little lavender applied behind theirs ears to help promote a restful night’s sleep. Lavender in the diffuser too to promote a peaceful, relaxing environment conducive to sleep. So important for growing babes.

Ever wake up feeling a little “off” emotionally? Our hormones fluctuate and it can and does effect our mood. Easy fix for that-geranium! Geranium has hormone balancing properties and is known to be a mood uplifter. When I roll on some geranium, I instantly feel happy!! I made a “happiness roller” that I keep in my pocket at work, it’s a blend of geranium, ylang ylang, and other mood uplifting oils. Whenever my coworkers and I start to feel a little stress (and that can happen frequently in our line of work #nurselife) I bust out the “happiness roller” and spread happiness all over the place!! It’s great!

Overworked yourself at the gym? At work? No more Motrin in our house! We use panaway or peppermint to soothe our sore muscle. One day at work I must have been using poor body mechanics and pulled something in my back. I could barely move the next morning, I was so sore. I had a friend help me put some panaway on my back and within minutes I felt good as new. Even better, the pain never returned!! I’m telling you, this stuff is magic!

My youngest, Penn, suffers from horrible allergies. He was always so snotty so I finally decided to try Zyrtec to see if it helped. Sure enough it did. The snot lessened and he was a happier babe. If a dose was missed, he was right back to being super snotty and uncomfortable. I hated the fact that I had the rely on medicine to keep him comfortable. I then learned about a simple blend of essential oils that works great for allergies. That was the night I decided would be Penn’s last dose of Zyrtec. The next morning I whipped up a blend of lavender, lemon, and peppermint in a roller bottle with coconut oil. That night, instead of dosing Penn with Zyrtec, he got a dose of the oil blend behind both ears. What do you know, the next morning, still no snot!! It worked! And it made me so happy to know that i could rely on nature to help my child over medicine!

I could go on and on about how these oils have helped me. I usually do! People probably think I’m the crazy oil lady because I talk about it soooo much! It’s just that I love what they do and I want others to experience what I have! I’m all about sharing the wealth! When you find something AMAZING, you tell your friends about it! Each day, I continue to learn more about what these powerful liquids can do. I’m so happy to be on this journey and so grateful that I can choose healthier alternatives for my family!

My boy

So my youngest child is my only boy. His name is Penn and he just turned one a few weeks ago. He is absolutely amazing but he has been getting sick so often since fall. This is the first child that I have experienced this. My oldest daughter, Taylor, I was lucky enough to not have to put in childcare as an infant. I was in nursing school at the time and I had family that was amazingly helpful. With Charlotte, my three year old, I was able to keep at home with a babysitter until she was almost two. With Penn, that boy was enrolled by 8 months old. I’m blaming Penn’s frequent illnesses on daycare!

One word, GERMS…and tiny immune systems not well equipped to fend them off day after day! Since Penn started back in September that has seldom been a week where he wasn’t sent home a day for “seeming off” or having “labored breathing!”. Me, as a nurse, tend to wait things out a bit with illness…I mean, really, what will a doctor do for a cold?! Runny nose, a little cough…he’s gonna be sick, it’s daycare! But as the months rolled on and one ear infection was diagnosed after the next (now 5 since October!) I realized I had to make a serious change.

I have been using essential oils for a while now but only sporadically until recent months. This brutal winter (health-wise) has motivated me to experiment with alternative modalities for managing symptoms and preventing illness.

I use Young Living Essential Oils! They are the best in my opinion! It is so important to use the purest oils when applying them to your (or your children’s) skin or when ingesting them. That’s why I chose YL. You know that you are getting “seed to seal” essential oils meaning straight from the plant to bottle.

For Penn, I have used several different oils to help him when he is sick. There are so many recipes out there. If you have an ailment, google essential oil for (fill in ailment) and I guarantee there’s an oil for that! When baby boy is runny nosed and seems to have labored breathing, my go to is snifflease. It’s a prediluted blend of eucalyptus, lavender, spruce, peppermint, cypress, dorado azul, marjoram, myrtle, ravensara, and pine essential oils. I put 1-2 drops in my palm and massage gentle onto his chest. Literally within minutes his breathing becomes relaxed and he seems much more comfortable. At bedtime I even add some extra lavender and it always seems to help him sleep through the night. In addition to using snifflease and lavender topically, I use eucalyptus and lavender in the diffuser at night to promote a peaceful, calm atmosphere conducive for sleep. It truly makes a world of difference! On nights I forget due to getting home super late from work after a 12.5 work day and an hour + commute, Penn often wakes in the middle of the night, especially when he is sick. This is rough! Especially when I have to work the next day! Using the diffuser absolutely limits nighttime wakings! Great for mama and also great for baby who needs extra sleep to heal!

For health promotion (or Illness prevention) thieves is a great oil. It’s blend Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary. Using it daily on wrists can ward off germs and help keep you healthy. My mistake has not been using thieves daily on the kids! I made a roller bottle with coconut oil and thieves (thieves must be diluted as it can burn the skin if used neat). I have it on the kitchen shelf above the sink presumably where my husband is sure to see it each morning and with the hope he will remember to roll it on the kids’ feet before getting them dressed. No such luck though! I’m still working on getting that built in to the daily routine! Hopefully soon! 🤞🏼

For now, I will continue to experiment with new blends and enjoy them for all they have to offer. If any of you reading this are intrigued to learn more, message me!
