How oils have changed my life (one year after I took the plunge into this world)

This month marks one year since I took the plunge and got myself a starter kit from young living. I was introduced to essential oils over 10 years ago when I took a holistic health class for nursing school. I was intrigued and fascinated by the magic these little bottles held back then but didn’t decide to fully incorporate them into my life until last August. I wish I had known what I know now, back then. I would’ve done it so much sooner. But hey, better late than never, right?!!

Young living has changed my life in so many ways! Restless babies? Lavender to the rescue! Each night after bath and before bed, each child gets a little lavender applied behind theirs ears to help promote a restful night’s sleep. Lavender in the diffuser too to promote a peaceful, relaxing environment conducive to sleep. So important for growing babes.

Ever wake up feeling a little “off” emotionally? Our hormones fluctuate and it can and does effect our mood. Easy fix for that-geranium! Geranium has hormone balancing properties and is known to be a mood uplifter. When I roll on some geranium, I instantly feel happy!! I made a “happiness roller” that I keep in my pocket at work, it’s a blend of geranium, ylang ylang, and other mood uplifting oils. Whenever my coworkers and I start to feel a little stress (and that can happen frequently in our line of work #nurselife) I bust out the “happiness roller” and spread happiness all over the place!! It’s great!

Overworked yourself at the gym? At work? No more Motrin in our house! We use panaway or peppermint to soothe our sore muscle. One day at work I must have been using poor body mechanics and pulled something in my back. I could barely move the next morning, I was so sore. I had a friend help me put some panaway on my back and within minutes I felt good as new. Even better, the pain never returned!! I’m telling you, this stuff is magic!

My youngest, Penn, suffers from horrible allergies. He was always so snotty so I finally decided to try Zyrtec to see if it helped. Sure enough it did. The snot lessened and he was a happier babe. If a dose was missed, he was right back to being super snotty and uncomfortable. I hated the fact that I had the rely on medicine to keep him comfortable. I then learned about a simple blend of essential oils that works great for allergies. That was the night I decided would be Penn’s last dose of Zyrtec. The next morning I whipped up a blend of lavender, lemon, and peppermint in a roller bottle with coconut oil. That night, instead of dosing Penn with Zyrtec, he got a dose of the oil blend behind both ears. What do you know, the next morning, still no snot!! It worked! And it made me so happy to know that i could rely on nature to help my child over medicine!

I could go on and on about how these oils have helped me. I usually do! People probably think I’m the crazy oil lady because I talk about it soooo much! It’s just that I love what they do and I want others to experience what I have! I’m all about sharing the wealth! When you find something AMAZING, you tell your friends about it! Each day, I continue to learn more about what these powerful liquids can do. I’m so happy to be on this journey and so grateful that I can choose healthier alternatives for my family!

Summer Essentials

Summer is here! Finally! While summer brings warmer weather and longer days, perfect for spending time with family friends outdoors, it also brings with it some unavoidable nuisances. The first that comes to mind are bugs! Warmer weather brings out mosquitos and other creepy crawlers that can ruin an otherwise pleasant experience. There are many products on the market that promise to keep bugs at bay. Unfortunately most of them contain ingredients that’s are harmful to you and our environment. Instead of reaching for those products, concoct a simple, all natural alternative using essential oils.

There are several combinations that work wonders against bugs. Choose the one that best suits you or try them all! Using water as your carrier, add 40 drops of oil from the blends I’ll list below to a glass spray bottle. Shake well and spray body as a healthy, natural method to keep bugs away so you can enjoy these long summer days.

• 20 drops lavender and 20 drops citronella

• 15 drops lavender, 10 drops geranium, & 15 drops cedarwood

• 10 drops lemon, 10 drops eucalyptus, & 20 drops lavender

• 10 drops lavender, 10 drops geranium, 5 drops patchouli, 15 drops spearmint

• 10 drops geranium, 10 drops citronella, 5 drops patchouli, 2 drops eucalyptus, 3 drops lemon, 5 drops lavender, & 5 drops spearmint

• 20 drops citronella, 5 drops lemon, 5 drops eucalyptus, 5 drops patchouli, 5 drops lavender

If you are reading this and the bugs have already gotten you, don’t fret, there an oil blend for that too! To soothe and heal bug bites, use tea tree oil to reduce itching and infection and lemongrass to prevent bacterial growth and to keep bites clean.

Help your pets stay healthy this summer too by concocting an all natural flea and tick repellant. Some essential oils that are effective in keeping fleas and ticks away include lavender, lemon, citronella, sage/clary sage, bergamot, cedarwood, lemon eucalyptus, lemongrass, peppermint, geranium, sweet orange, and rosemary. Make a spray using a combination of any of the above mentioned oils with water in a glass spray bottle. Shake well and spray generously on your pets fur. My favorite is 15 drops of lavender, 15 drops cedarwood, and water! I love that I’m not using toxic chemicals on my dog-better for him and the entire family.

Another struggle many face in summertime is the painful sunburn. It’s true, a fresh summer glow undoubtedly makes you feel better, look more refreshed. But getting it gradually is key. Slow and steady my friends!! Of course there are many out there, my oldest daughter included, that want that deep golden tan RIGHT now! Unfortunately, even though you may typically tan easily, that first exposure to seaside sun can leave your skin scorched if you don’t take the proper precautions. Apply (and reapply) that spf! I love sunscreens that contain simple ingredients such as zinc oxide. My go to, especially for my little ones, is babo botanicals. I love that I know exactly what I’m putting on their sensitive skin and I feel confident that it will keep them protected while out in the sun. If you happen to be one of those who occasionally suffer from sunburn, there are some natural remedies that can speed the healing process and make you feel more comfortable. Lavender essential oil is one of those oils that needs to be on hand at all times! It can do so many things! It’s amazing for the skin, so when you find yourself a little overcooked from the sun, pull out that lavender and let the healing begin!

To make an after sun spray, combine 10 drops lavender, 10 drops peppermint, 1/2 cup witch hazel, and 2 tbsp aloe vera in a 4oz glass spray bottle.

Summer sun, salty sea water drying out your hair? Adding a couple drops of EOs to your shampoo or making a hair treatment spray can help combat dry hair leaving your hair soft and healthy this summer season. Lavender is amazing for hair. Lavender oil is known to sooth dry scalp. Rosemary EO is also quite good at preventing dry scalp and dandruff. Combine olive oil and 5 drops of rosemary to make a hair mask. Massage scalp with mixture and leave-on for 3-5 hours. Wash hair as usual. You’ll find your hair is soft and silky post treatment! Other essential oils that help keep hair healthy include camomile, clary sage, lemongrass and peppermint. In addition to keeping scalp nourished, camomile has lightening properties so if you long for those beachy blonde locks, camomile is for you! Another benefit of peppermint is its ability to prevent lice infestation. If you have kiddos heading off to day camp, make a peppermint hair spray to prevent lice.

With summer officially here, so are beach days, pool parties, cookouts, camp outs and hiking, and boating. Keep yourself and your family happy and healthy this summer the natural way! Happy summer friends!

The great green spring clean

Spring has finally sprung after a long, cold, snowy winter. With May a day away, I feel like it’s pretty safe to say we are done with snow til next winter. While I have to admit I did enjoy it, i am so ready for warmer weather and all that green that comes with it.

Spring brings trees back to life; their brown and yellow leaves replaced by new green ones and often flowering buds. The birds begin to chirp melodies in the morning as if to beckon you to start your day. I love driving around in the spring time and seeing all of the new life, from the trees and flowers to the baby animals being brought into the world. It’s so magical to witness the transformation from season to season. I often dream about living somewhere else; somewhere warm. But then I think about how much I love this time, the evolution from winter to spring and summer to fall. I know I would miss that.

There is something about spring that makes me want a clean slate, a fresh start. I like to rid myself of things I don’t need and declutter. I have finally realized in recent years that less is definitely more. Along with freeing up space in my home, donating our unwanted items to those in needs teaches a valuable lesson to our children. Once I get my home decluttered, I feel the need to do a thorough spring cleaning. That top to bottom cleanse to set you and your family up for many relaxing months ahead. Cleaning this spring means relaxation this summer!

There are so many different cleansers and products on the market that promise to get your space sparkling. Many of them live up to their promise but at what cost? Many of the cleaning products out there are made with harsh chemicals and materials that put you, your family, and our environment at risk. This spring, make a change. Choose to use products that are eco-friendly and free of added toxins. Choose to clean green!

My go-to for cleaning, you may guess, are essential oils. Many essential oils are known to be antimicrobial and there is research to support this claim. A study I read proved lemongrass essential oil to be effective against a multitude of different bacteria. I’ve been using lemongrass EO ever since as an everyday surface cleanser. Other EOs that are effective against bacteria include lavender, tea tree, peppermint, and thieves. Combine (in a glass spray bottle-found on Amazon) distilled water with 15 drops of essential oil of choice.

Young Living makes it easy by selling thieves cleaner which is combines Thieves, Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils. You can get creative and mix whichever antimicrobial fighting EOs that suit you. I love lemongrass and lavender. It makes a highly effective all natural cleaning agent and you get to enjoy it’s amazing scent all at the same time!

Another amazing task that lemongrass can conquer is getting sharpie off of surfaces and out of fabric! I came home from work one night to find white sharpie scribbled all over our chalkboard wall in our kitchen! My three year old had mistaken a sharpie for a chalk marker, in turn, permanent scribble was sprawled all over the chalkboard. I tried lemon essential oil first because I had heard that it was effective against sharpie stains but when that didn’t work, I pulled out the lemongrass. Within minutes of application the sharpie ink began to drip off! It took a few applications but sure enough, the sharpie came off completely!

Tea tree not only has antimicrobial properties, it also is a great anti-fungal. Try combining tea tree oil with a alcohol based carrier to a glass spray bottle to rid surfaces of mold and mildew. This works great in the bathroom on tile, tubs, shower curtains, anything that might be prone to mildew buildup.

Let’s talk floors. Ditch your commercial floor cleansers and concoct an all natural floor cleanser that will do the job just as good if not better and one that will most certainly be less harmful to your floors. For hardwoods, fill a bucket with water and white vinegar and add several drops of lemon essential oil. This combination kills bacteria and is gentle on your floors. Feel free to switch up the EO you use; tea tree is another great choice for floors.

Want sparkling windows to let the spring sunshine flood your home? Use a blend of lemon essential oil and white vinegar to get your windows and mirrors shining bright! You can even add lemon EO to your washing machine (once water fills) to get your whites super bright! I have also replaced chemical filled dryer sheets with natural wool dryer balls enhanced with a few drops of essential oil of choice. Lavender, Citrus, or Geranium are great oils to get your laundry smelling amazing!

The possibilities are really endless. You cannot go wrong. Experiment and pick what works best for you. Take comfort knowing that your cleaning products are not harmful to your family (pets included) and our great planet. Choose cleaning tools that are earth conscious as well. Feel good about those choices and feel good all around! Get cleaning and stay green!

What’s in the box?

This is your Young Living Premium starter kit breakdown! I have referenced the starter kit many times before but I have yet to explain exactly what you get when you join my team and purchase your kit. So what’s in the box???! Young Living has designed a kit that allows you to easily get started using and loving oils by including 11 essential oils that you would find yourself using on a regular basis.

I have to admit, when I first received my kit I was a bit overwhelmed. What do I use copaiba for? I knew the basics. Take lavender for example. I knew lavender was great for relaxation. In fact, lavender is the only thing I used during the birth of my third child. I was amazed at how much it helped not only keep me calm but help control the pain. It was the greatest labor experience of the three (It helped that it was the quickest also!). I use lavender to settle the kids before bed, adding a drop or two to the bath water or applying a drop to their skin. It works wonders! I later learned of many other uses for lavender. It has antiseptic and healing properties making it great for open cuts. Applying lavender to open wounds helps to prevent infections and speed wound healing. It also reduces scarring. You will never find me without lavender. It’s a must have ALWAYS!

While I knew and loved lavender, I was not so sure about the rest of the kit and what I’d use them for. It took some time and research but I have fallen in love with each oil that is included in the starter kit. Each oil is amazing and their uses are abundant. If I’m running low on anything I make sure that it is on my essential rewards order for the month. Cannot be without my oils! You too will fall in love with these precious little bottles and all of the magic their contents hold!

So here we go! Your Premium starter kit comes with a diffuser of choice, if I could get my starter kit all over again, id pick the aria diffuser! It’s beautiful! Makes the starter kit a bit pricier but so worth it in my opinion! If the aria is not in your budget, the dew drop and desert mist diffusers are great too! I have the dew drop and love it!

You get eleven 5ml premium essential oils. Sample of thieves cleanser, two 2oz samples of ningxa red, 10 smalls glass bottles to share the love with family and friends, resource materials, and essential oils product guide.

Here are the oils you get…

Lavender-soothing, skin support, calming.

Frankincense-radiant skin (get rid of those fine lines), grounding, calming.

Panaway-tension relief, muscle soother, joint support, post exercise support

Purification-air purifier, deodorizer, anti-itch, bug repellent.

Digize-helps maintain normal digestion, good for heart burn, soothes stomach upset.

Lemon-detoxification, purification, home cleaning, uplifting.

Peppermint-energizing, head tension tamer, digestive support, circulatory support.

There are so many ways to use the oils you will get when you receive your starter kits! The combinations are endless. A Taste of spring

It’s hard to believe that it was snowing just a few days ago and yesterday was a gorgeous 75 degrees and sunny in southeastern Pennsylvania. It could not have come at a better time. The sunshine was a welcome reprieve to the sadness that filled our homes over the past week as we felt the pain of those directly affected by last week’s tragedy in Florida.

There is no denying that sunshine is good for the soul; it makes us happy. I took advantage of being off yesterday and got myself and my kids outside! We ate breakfast and headed to one of our favorite spots, the Morris Arboretum. We have had a family membership there for the past two years and we have definitely gotten more than our money’s worth! It’s our go-to spot when we are in need of some fresh air. Click on the link The arboretum to learn more.

We arrived shortly after they opened their gates around 10:30 in the morning. Not surprisingly, it was already filled with other families who had the same idea of soaking up this uncommon February warmth and sunshine. With Penn slung to my chest, the girls and I began to explore the arboretum’s beautiful grounds. No matter how frequently we have visited, I always have a unique experience each time I venture to the arboretum.

Last spring, on one of my last days of maternity leave, I came to the arboretum with just Penn. I soaked up the last of my time off from work with him as we wandered without a plan through the vast landscape there. Even though I had been to the arboretum countless times before, I stumbled across an area I had not seen before. It felt magical to come to this grotto that led to a cave that passed through to a trail alongside a bubbling creek. It was fresh, new…rejuvenating. It made me feel hopefully for what would come in the coming weeks as I anxiously looked forward to the inevitable of having to leave Penn when I had to return to work. And it was ok. And I felt ok.

I took the girls there today. We had been to the arboretum so many times since that day last spring but it wasn’t until today that I stumbled across the grotto again. They were both just as captivated by its beauty as I was a year ago. And I felt that same feeling again. It felt like spring. And the dark cave who’s opening allowed the brilliant sunshine to flood in, drew us to that path that raveled, twisting through the woods beside a singing creek made me happy. It made us all happy. It made us forget about all of our worries for a while. It helped us to be present and to enjoy the here and now. That’s how magical nature is. It has the power to transport us to a different place. Getting outside has been my therapy when I’m feeling down and it works every single time! Looking forward to warmer weather but trying to savor each and every day, rain or shine!

And hey, if it’s raining (like it is here today), you could always just dab on a little oil (ie-geranium, lavender, frankincense, bergamot, ylang ylang, peppermint, orange…I could go on and on!) and you will instantly feel happy!!

Always sunny,

Enough is enough

My oldest missed the bus today. I was mad! On the days I don’t have to work, my mornings start with waking her up early to get her off to school by 6:50. Then, hopefully I can drift back to sleep a bit longer until the little ones wake up. Typically, I get an extra 20 minutes of shut eye, but hey, every minute counts! Today, of course, was the day they slept till almost 9—that NEVER happens!

There was tension on the ride to school. Normal stuff, I thought, considering the way the day had started. As we inched closer to school, I realized it wasn’t that normal stuff. My daughter was crying, she was anxious. She did not want to go to school today. I asked her what was wrong; we had already moved past the fact that she missed the bus, she knew I wasn’t mad anymore. Her angst had nothing to do with that. She was afraid to go to school.

In light of what happened last week in Florida, and things that have happened way too many times before, she was scared for her safety. She verbalized fear of someone attacking her school the way many others had across the world. A child should not fear going to school. A school should be a sanctuary, a second home, a safe place.

In today’s society, it has become all too common to hear of children dying due to gun violence. We need to make a change. The time is not just now; the time was decades ago. For people with mental illness to have the ability to acquire assault weapons is a complete disgrace. We need to make our voices heard. We need to stand up for our children. We need to protect them. We need to make this world a safe and peaceful place where children can flourish and not have to live in fear every single day.

Enough is enough. Never again should our normal programming being interrupted to inform us of another school shooting. We all have a voice and we need to make it heard. Write to your senators, participate in activist movements. Let’s all come together to put an end to gun violence.

I didn’t make Taylor go to school today. I am scared, too. I want to protect my children and keep them safe. She will go to school tomorrow, and she will still be afraid. I cannot keep her home with me everyday; most of us realistically cannot keep our children home with us everyday. We need to fight to make our school safe and help prevent another tragedy from occurring.

The students of Majory Stoneman Douglas High School have started a movement to put a stop to such violence. On March 14th, there is the National School Walkout. This was established by the same people who organized the Women’s March. Students, faculty, and parents are encouraged on that day to walkout of school for 17 minutes in honor of each individual that was lost in the latest school shooting. On March 24th, March for Our Lives will take place in Washington, DC and other cities across the country. March for Our Lives aims to spread awareness and help make the lives of students across the world the number one priority. Never again will a child go to school and not return home that night. Enough is enough.

Please visit https://www.marchforourlives.com to learn where you can march. The more voices we the have, the louder it will resonate. Please do your part to help ensure the safety of children everywhere. You can make a difference. Do your part to help elicit change for the better and ensure a brighter future for all.

In retrospect, Taylor missing the bus this morning was so unbelievably unimportant and I am mad at myself for getting angry at her for it. It’s so easy to take for granted how precious every minute truly is. Next time, I will have a different take on it. I will look at it as an opportunity to spend an extra 20 minutes with just her. A time to catch up, a time to enjoy her. Life is too short. We just need to enjoy the ride… literally.

Keep riding high

After a few weeks of highs, looking forward to our team, the Philadelphia Eagles, bringing home the Lombardi trophy, it’s easy to find yourself in a slump following all of the excitement. I often find that after looking forward to something for so long, enjoying the fun ride along the way, there is this period of feeling down immediately following. Do you guys ever feel like that?

Fear not, I have a solution to keeping spirits up and continuing to ride that wave of excitement to the next big thing! How, you ask…yep, you guessed it-OILS! My go-to when I’m not feeling my happiest is geranium. They don’t call it the great balancer for nothing! Geranium is known to balance hormones. When something major happens (like your team winning the super bowl!) your endorphins sky rocket. After the excitement wears off it’s natural to feel a bit off balance. Applying a few drops of geranium on your wrist or behind your ears can instantly uplift mimicking that feeling of sheer bliss that is experienced in life’s greatest events. Smelling it’s scent can signal the brain’s limbic system to release chemicals to recreate positive emotions and make you happy!

My family is die hard when it comes to the eagles-we bleed green! Many of us waited a lifetime for a championship win. That moment finally came and we literally could not be happier. All across the region you could feel the joy people had during this time. It was palpable. It’s amazing a football team could evoke such positivity in a community especially considering all else going on in the world today.

The natural high that accompanies such events is amazing. When that feeling wears off, don’t forget there are ways to naturally keep that feeling alive. In addition to essential oils, there are many ways to accomplish this. The day after the Eagles parade of champions, I have to admit, I was feeling a little down. I was exhausted from the week’s events-from the days leading up to the big game, high hopes held for an Eagles victory to the big game itself, culminating with a massive celebration in the city of brotherly love to honor our team, newly crowned WORLD CHAMPIONS and family life and working in between. I knew I had to do something in order to pick myself up. I had plans to travel south to spend time with my mother in law who had been away for weeks and just returned home with a new puppy. While the thought of traveling after a long week and a long work week ahead felt daunting, I knew it was as what I needed. I packed up the car and the kids early Saturday morning and headed to the beach and I am so happy I did! Even in the wintertime, there is something magical about being by the ocean. A quick walk on the beach, breathing in that moist salty air, hearing the ocean waves crashing on the shore, I felt happy. That, coupled with the ones I love (and puppy kisses!) no better way to keep that winning feeling going.

If you are ever feeling low, post big event or otherwise, all you need is a little fresh air, family, and oils!! That’s love!

Geranium is not included in your starter kit but lavender is another oil that makes me happy and it is included in starter kit. But get geranium too!
